When to Open and Close Your Pool in Oklahoma
In Central Oklahoma, most pools open between March and May and close between September and November — before the first hard freeze. Getting the timing right makes the season easier and, more importantly, protects your plumbing and equipment over winter.
When to open
Opening earlier in spring — even before you're ready to swim — makes the whole season easier. It's far simpler to get ahead of algae in cool water than to fight a green pool once it's warm. Once daytime temperatures are consistently in the 70s, it's a good time to open the pool: cover off, equipment started and checked, system primed, and water balanced.
When to close
The key date for closing isn't the calendar — it's the first hard freeze. You want the pool closed and winterized before water sitting in the lines and equipment can freeze. In our area that usually means closing sometime from late September through November, depending on the year.
Why closing on time matters
Water expands when it freezes. Water left in return lines, the pump, or the filter can crack pipes and crack equipment housings — an expensive surprise come spring. A proper closing blows out and plugs the lines, drops the water to winter level, winterizes the equipment, and gets the cover on. If you'd like a custom inground safety cover installed at the same time, we can close and cover in one visit.
